Best Practice: Intro to SEO, How to Change your Title Tag

Best Practice is a sharing of ideas, tricks, tips, lifestyles, ways of doing things and practices. It is the idea that everyone has something to bring to the table and everyone has something that they do well. Each week we share something that has made our lives easier.

Today’s Best Practice is by Chris from Blue Flurry Marketing Group. Chris has been helping me over the past couple of months with my SEO and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results. I would show you graphs and charts, but really don’t want to bore you. Instead I asked Chris to share the easeist SEO tip he could think of. Welcome Chris!

‘Everyone wants to be at the top of Google when their product or service is searched. And for good reason; 75% of business goes to the top 3 search results on Google, and a whopping 98% goes to the first page (top 10)! There are many elements that factor into getting to the top of Google. These elements make up the industry known as “Search Engine Optimization” or more commonly referred to as SEO.

Today I wanted to show you one element that can help you achieve better search engine positioning. This is one of the first things I do when I start working with a new client.

Title tags appear at the top of your web browser page, and also in a bookmark if a visitor decides to index your page. This is one of the key phrases that Google, Yahoo, and Bing search when searching for keywords. Is it possible for your page to be found if you don’t have keywords in your title tag? Yes. But the likelihood decreases dramatically. It is very easy to change your title tag and get started on your way towards having a “search engine optimized” website or blog.

For example, Susan’s title tag before and after.

First, open up your “Edit HTML” tab. Here, I have shown the “Edit HTML” tab for Blogger. In WordPress, it will be under the “Editor” Tab. Once opened, you will see a small window with a bunch of text that might look like gibberish to some of you

To make it easy, click inside the window and then type Ctrl+F for PC users or command+F for Mac users. In the “find” window, type the word “title” and this will find all “title” words in your HTML. Usually you will want the first “title” that comes up. It will look something like the above image in your HTML window. After the “>” symbol, you will want to put in your new title tag that you would like to use.

Try to use keywords that promote and describe your product or service (what you want users to search for to find you). Notice that we have used “Handmade Moccasins” for Freshly Picked.

I like to separate my keywords with a “|” and I usually put 2 or 3 key phrases before putting the name of the blog or business. Make sure that at the end of your title tag you finish it with “” as seen above.

Click on “Save Template” and presto, you have a brand new Title Tag, ready to be found by Google.’
