Stories of the Start: Shifrah & Ezekiel

Freshly Picked is about sweet baby feet, but more importantly, it’s about celebrating mamas and babies. Every week we will feature a birth story, a tale of the start of a mother and her child. We want this to be a resource for moms and future moms and a place for sharing and inspiring. Women become mothers in a million different ways. Here are their stories.

Many thanks to Shifrah for sharing her story with us!

I joked, mostly to myself, that once the built-in bookshelves were done, I’d go into labor. This was perfect timing because it was a day after my mom and sister arrived and the eve of a dear friend’s birthday, the date we’d “decided” baby boy should actually be born.

Lo and behold, at three-thirty AM on November 15th, with the caulking barely dry on the bookshelves, I woke up with contractions. After a while of working through them in bed (they weren’t that bad, but they kept me awake), I asked Dear to start a bath for me — a request which he knew meant labor was getting going. Simplest Banana Pancakes

banana pancakes

By Millie

I little over a month ago I got to go stay with my brother and his family in North Carolina. In the morning his wife would make us banana pancakes with nut butters and berries. They were delicious.

The recipe is so simple, I thought it would be fun for my kids to do. When I first told my kids about it they were a little nervous, We’ve tried a similar simple muffin recipe that we didn’t like, so the kids were nervous. But these pancakes were a hit. I had hoped to get better photos of the kids at work, but unfortunately, my kitchen is the darkest room in the house.

I drew the recipe out for the kids to follow. We are still getting used to cracking eggs, and I helped flip them, but there was a lot they could do on their own. One step I wished I would have illustrated was that the bananas need to be mashed, then add the eggs. One banana mixed together with 2-3 eggs. Cook them like a pancake and they’re done.
