Freshly Picked Reviews: Xtend Barre Provo

This review was conducted by our friend Sarah at Xtend Barre in Provo.

Barre kicked my butt, and I love it.

I’m not the type to work out, but I wanted to make a change, so I decided to eat better and try something new.  Provo now has a great place for this called Xtend Barre at the Riverwoods (there are locations all over the country!).  Luckily you can see the beautiful mountains because this workout is HARD. I went three times a week for a month and my body definitely changed. The exercises look easy almost but they are so effective, and you look pretty and graceful as you work out…extra motivation!

Thanks Xtend Barre Provo for a very hard but very great month!

Stories of the Start: Kathy & Claire

Freshly Picked is about sweet baby feet, but more importantly, it’s about celebrating mamas and babies. Every week we will feature a birth story, a tale of the start of a mother and her child. We want this to be a resource for moms and future moms and a place for sharing and inspiring. Women become mothers in a million different ways. Here are their stories.

Thank you, Kathy West, for sharing your story of birth and motherhood.

I think I’m going to say something about the universe collapsing because I don’t know a better way to write about the birth of our daughter.

I could give you a play-by-play chronology: labor started Sunday morning at 10:30, water broke at 1am on Monday (10 minutes after we finished watching the episode of The Office when Pam has her baby), and baby girl arrived 7 hours later. But that feels insufficient somehow.

Anything I say will feel insufficient. People I love and trust tried to prepare me with good advice (and I took most of it), but some things, I had no way to know. Some things aren’t easily described.

I prepared mentally for labor: we went to a lamaze class, I practiced some breathing techniques and visualizations. I thought I would distract myself from pain, go somewhere else in my mind when the time came. But once we arrived at the hospital and the contractions stepped up, I realized the whole experience would be a bit more physical than I imagined. Continue reading

Make Stained Glass With Your Toddler

I really struggle with the paper piles around my house. Incoming mail to be filed, shredded, recycled or the worst, acted upon. I seem to let these piles build up even after a thorough cleaning and creating a new system. Well, this activity was made possible by a failed system of plastic folders. I had seen this clever idea and thought it was a good fit for B who is almost two years old.
DSC_0222I made some  circle templates out of white paper. I could have traced them directly onto the plastic, but I couldn’t find a washable marker and didn’t want any lines left when I cut out the circles. Holding the template in place, I cut up the colorful vellum folder into a lot of circles. I got the window a little wet and demonstrated to B, how to stick them on. She jumped right in sticking and peeling off the circles. It was a lot of fun to play with the colors by stacking them on top of each other and to see how the sun made them glow. Some are still stuck to the window making a nice stained glass effect.
