Notes From the Med: Why We Are Living in Spain

This past summer my sweet sister Katie moved her family of 6 to Spain. Now, she writes me weekly ‘Notes From the Med.’ To follow along on her Spanish adventures check out her blog, Katie Wanders.

Dear Susie,
How are you doing? I loved the Instagram pictures of the cooking class you took, it looked like so much fun.
A couple of your readers wanted to know why we are currently living in Spain, I thought I would explain. My husband is a pilot in the USAF, living his life long dream. Well, the dream he had right after marrying me of course, because I was his first dream. Right now he is participating in an exchange program with the Spanish AF. They send one pilot to the states to teach students to fly and we were able came here, where he is an instructor at the Spanish Air Force Academy.
This has been a little different experience for us than when we lived in Japan. In Okinawa we lived on a military base and had the military community as support. Here we are 8 hours from our mailbox, and we only get to check it every 3-4 months.
As of right now we are the only Americans living in our area, there will be another couple coming in December, which we are excited about.  It has been a crazy adjustment for us after living on military bases for the last 8 years.  In the military, since we live so far from family, we depend on the base community for moral and physical support especially when your military family member is sent away for a trip or deployment. We do feel a little lonely here, but we are rising to the challenge and loving the adventure.
I hope your kids have a great Halloween, they have Halloween here but it seems a little scarier than in the states. At the costume store today there were more diablo(devil), vampire, and witch costumes than anything else.
Besos,
Katie
