How to Dye Pasta

One day, my son came home from school with a dyed pasta necklace. I could not believe how vibrant the colors were and I was immediately intrigued. It was getting close to my oldest daughters birthday and we thought it would be a perfect activity for her party. And it was! Here’s what you do:

Mix 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol with about 10 drops of food coloring and about 1 or 2 cups of pasta in a plastic bag or jar. That’s it! We let ours sit overnight, rotating or mixing every so often. We did all the rainbow colors, plus pink. Once the colors seem set and are as dark as you like, you’ll want to spread them out to finish drying. Doing so many colors was a little more involved, but worth it.

A year later we still have some left that we love having as a staple in our art supplies. Stringing them is a fun way to help younger children with fine motor skills, and they are great for talking about patterns as they are a little older. We have also glued them to paper, or in combinations with paintings, or cut and paste projects.
